Taste of Galena

Green thumb or not, visitors can stroll the county’s lush gardens during the warm summer months and into fall. Twenty-five years in the making, Linmar Gardens, perched above Galena on 3-1/2 acres, is artfully planted with perennials and annuals punctuated by waterfalls, walkways, whimsical statuary and gazebos. The owners of Timber Ridge Gardens in rural Elizabeth landscaped a century-old farm into a perennial nursery and 15 acres of display gardens. Peruse the lush hillside gardens, or occupy an Adirondack chair and contemplate a 20-mile view of the countryside.

From summer into fall, stop at the county’s farm stands for a wide variety of fresh summer vegetables, fall produce and seasonal fruits. Conveniently located along U.S. 20 in Stockton, Marvin’s Garden also features brown eggs and lamb. The Brown Barn Vegetable Stop in Scales Mound presents organically grown vegetables. Select from a variety of fresh produce at White’s Berry & Produce Farm located on Blackjack Road. Pick your own raspberries at Murphy’s Gardens or visit Wooded Wonderland where
“u-pick” your own blueberries. Both gardens are located just outside of Galena.

In a tradition that dates back more than 150 years, local growers gather to sell seasonal produce to the public. Consider a trip to Galena, Elizabeth, Stockton and Warren to shop at one of the local farmers’ markets. Search food/cooking on the Calendar of Events for a lists of farmers’ markets. Many of these attractions and more are listed in the Jo Daviess County Home Grown Directory available from the Jo Daviess County Farm Bureau in Elizabeth and at the Visitor Information Center in Galena.

Get a quick lesson in winemaking with a stop at one of our award-winning wineries. Both Galena Cellars Vineyard & Winery in rural Galena and Massbach Ridge Winery in rural Elizabeth offer samples in their tasting rooms and tours of their vineyards and bottling plants. As the holidays near, plan a trip to Bill’s Christmas Trees in Scales Mound or Ochs Tree Farm in rural Galena, both open weekends from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Choose your own Christmas tree; have it cut and netted on the spot.

A harvest of homemade jams, jellies, sauces, canned fruits and vegetables, and baked goods is available at village shops and seasonal farm stands. In Galena, gather locally grown and prepared edibles, along with specialty foods and gourmet ingredients, at The Grateful Gourmet, The Great Galena Peddlery and La Provencale. The animated Chef Ivo’s Chicago-based Galena Canning Co. yields a popular line of specialty foods. Take time to cultivate personal food preparation skills in a “Come Cook with Me” class at the The Great Galena Cookery.
