When is the peak of Fall color in Jo Daviess County?


Regarding the peak of Fall colors, many factors determine their intensity and timing, such as the amount of precipitation and temperatures. Generally, a hard frost precedes the peak of Fall colors. While we cannot predict the precise peak, if you contact us shortly before your visit we would be happy to give you an idea of how the colors are developing.





Are there any scenic motorcycle rides in Jo Daviess County?


Jo Daviess County is a beautiful place to take a motorcycle ride. Please be aware that many of the township roads have no shoulders or guardrails and some have gravel surfaces. Here are a couple of suggested routes along hard-surfaced roads:


1. Start on Stagecoach Trail in Galena and travel east to the Elizabeth-Scales Mound Road. Turn right (south) to Highway 20; then turn left (east) to South Derinda Road. Turn right (south) and follow the signage to Savanna. In Savanna, take Hwy. 84 north through Hanover and back to Hwy. 20. Turn left onto Hwy. 20 and head west to Galena.


2. Start on Stagecoach Trail in Galena and travel east to Warren. In Warren, take Hwy. 78 south through Stockton and continue south to Mt. Carroll. In Mt. Carroll, turn right on Hwy. 64/52 (west) to Savanna. In Savanna, take Hwy. 84 north through Hanover. In Hanover, turn left onto Blackjack Road and follow Blackjack back to Hwy. 20 into Galena.






When is the big craft fair in Galena?


The annual Galena Country Fair is held in Grant Park on the weekend before the Columbus Day holiday. In 2012, the fair will be held Saturday-Sunday, Oct. 6-7 and in 2013 it will be held on October 12-13. The fair attracts thousands of visitors and lodging reservations should be made well in advance. Where can I rent a wheelchair?


Hartig Drug Store located at 11002 Bartell Blvd., about 2 miles west of downtown Galena, has two wheelchairs for rent. There is a $100.00 fully-refundable deposit and a $15.00 per day rental fee. You can reserve a wheelchair for use during your visit by calling Hartig’s at 815-777-2700.
